New Fruits Abound

It has been some time since my last posting, mostly because the Power has failed to produce much of interest - until now.
The zucchini plants have produced their largest fruit yet, and the tomatoes are finally beginning to be harvested. Still no word from the slack-ass peppers.

Maintaining the Power

Things are cruising right along, with the Power bearing zucchini at a pace of one (1) per diem. The tomatoes are looking fine, but the mint and basil have developed some sort of leaf disease.

Bearing Fruit

At last the household is consuming the fruits of the POWER. The zucchini plants are in need of a trim, as they are crowding out other plants which now gasp for air and light.

Coffee grounds from the local Starbucks (c) are the newest weapon in my defensive campaign against the Slug Army (c). The damage from their previous attacks is especially prominent on the pepper plants.

Binding the Fury

I have finally purchased metal posts for the quickly-growing tomato plants.

In addition, we can see that there are several zucchini forming ever-larger, and the tallest marigold plant is about to flower.

Lightning bugs have also infiltrated the Power, which I don't really mind.

Lastly, more trouble with slugs, for which I have gone to the local Starbucks to get large bags of coffee grounds.

I have finally put flowers into the newly-claimed section of the garden. If you're wondering what the white spots on the ground are - well, they are the worst mistake I have ever made: last night, in the early hours, I went to see how my beer traps were working. I found an army of slugs all over the new plants. Enraged, I poured salt on each of them. Now it is my duty to clean the salt and slug remains off of the otherwise pristine ground, and go fetch some coffee grounds at Starbucks.

Note also that the zucchini plants now menace the States of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey with their unrivaled POWER.

Slugs!!! Flowers!!!

Following another highly-successful, informal BBQ dinner in the backyard, it was observed that there was an infestation in the garden: the Limax Maximus, or "Leopard Spotted Slug," in the vulgaris. To combat this problem, I set up traps of beer poured into small containers on the ground. The slugs, being famously huge drunks, are attracted to the booze and, having had their fill of the substance, promptly become inebriated and drown in it. I have eliminated 12 of their number so far using this method.

In other news, the first flowers have unfolded on the zucchini plants. They are a wonder to behold!

I had a great dream last night, in which I was instructed to claim more territory for the garden. The new patch I have cleared increases the garden's size by nearly 33%. Who gave me this dreamtime directive, but the Virgin Mary herself.

Incredible Mulch Effect

Having tired of incessant weeding, and of the fact that the garden has up to now looked as if it were but a gaggle of weeds stuck into the ground of the dusty, dusty moon, I have placed mulch around all but the far corners of the garden. The end result is a marked improvement.

Things are moving right along. Steady rain has been the order of the day here in Brooklyn, as well as intense heat.

First Week of June

Most of the plants now are in something of a homeostatic phase, with the exception of the zucchini, which are speedily overtaking all space and time. The marigolds are big, but still coyly withhold their flowers, testing my patience yet again. The tomato plants are still somehow alive, and the pot-planted basil is finally beginning to grow.

I must hang my head in shame, for I put many of the plants in the ground ahead of time - the torrential rains that followed put an end to most of the tomato plants, and a couple of the marigolds. Those that survived, however, have done well to please me by exhibiting MAXIMUM GARDEN POWER.
In addition, I have seen fit to purchase some other flowers, including chrysanthemums and some blue one that I will name later.
Further, Matt from upstairs gave me two yellow pepper plants, and an additional marigold. All are in top shape.

The plants are now big enough to put into the ground, save the tiny basil plants, which I fear may die if I were to do so. As an added surprise, the garlic cloves I threw in the ground one night while cooking dinner have continued to grow in the garden bed.

Week 4

Furious rains have come down on the garden bed, which all but flattened the alreadydowntrodden zucchini plant in the middle of the bed. Everything else is moving right along.

So now the bed has been weeded yet again. The plants are moving ahead with their growth at a reasonable rate of speed.

Leaf Developments

Several new leaves have come into existence, notably on the marigolds and zucchini. I have also included a picture of the large plants that currently inhabit parts of the garden bed. Weeding this weekend will be a chore.

Week 3

Not much to report today. Brian and I chopped down some of the out-of-control branches of the evergreen. Also, there are flowers everywhere.

Slow and Steady

The plants are testing my patience with their diminishing growth returns. Nevertheless, they are all moving along steadily. Note that the second leaf set of the marigolds have serrated edges, and that one of them is completely gimped out. This is because the seed pod was stuck to the first leaves until today, when I finally decided to intervene and remove it.
Note also that the MGP house is losing a fine comrade in Brian, who is leaving this week for Philadelphia. He is shown packing his things.

A Transplant Finally Made

I have removed the haywire zucchini monsters to their new home: the garden bed. There they have been fertilized and watered, separated from each other by a distance of about one foot. There is one exception to this separation technique, which will function as an experiment to see which of the two "siamese" zucchini vines (see picture at top) has more MAXIMUM POWER than the other.

Too much Zucchini Power

The zucchini plants have been going out of control! As you can see, the roots are all over the place, so as an emergency measure, I have placed the devils by themselves, before they take over the other plants' planters. It seems I have planted too many of these behemoths.

The Fun Continues

Every single planter has now sprouted. I have placed the closeups in this order: tomatoes, marigolds, zucchini, basil, mint. The latter have been taking their sweet time, but they're coming around, the more I threaten them.

Garden Terrors

Some new plants have been terrorizing the garden bed since the initial clearing. It is obvious that weeding will be no small chore. In addition, the Giant Evergreen Shrub near the fence is casting a huge shadow over parts of the bed. It will have to be pruned.

I have started the business with the newspaper planters above. The garden will consist of tomatoes, zucchini, basil, spearmint and marigolds. There is great promise for this to be one of the greatest areas in Greenpoint.
